Influence of feeding Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii on immunoglobulins of sow’s colostrum and milk

An experiment was undertaken to verify if sows fed Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii (SB) produce more immunoglobulins in colostrum and milk. On a commercial farm, sows were blocked by parity and body condition 3 weeks before expected parturition. They were divided into: a control group (n=33) fed the regular farm feeding programme and an SB group (n=28), fed 25 g per day of 10% SB concentrate (5×1010 CFU/day), from the start of the trial to weaning. Colostrum was sampled just after birth of the first piglet, and 12 and 24h later, and a sample of milk was collected on day 19 of lactation.

SB significantly increased the IgG concentration of colostrum by 21% (P<0.05) and the IgA concentration by 18% (P<0.01) but did not influence IgM concentration. IgA in milk tended to increase in SB fed sows (+18%, P<0.10).
