Ireland pig numbers up 2.4%

The total number of pigs in Ireland in June 2011 was estimated at 1,555,100. This represents an increase of 2.4% since June 2010. The number of breeding pigs decreased by 3.1% and non-breeding pig numbers increased by 3.1% in the same period.
A comparison of the June 2010 and June 2011 figures shows that in the breeding category the number of:
- Gilts not yet served increased by 4.5%.
- Other Sows for breeding decreased by 3.2%.
