As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), some 26.7 million pigs were kept in Germany on the reference day 3 May 2011. Thus the stock of pigs was slightly declining over the past six months (about –0.7%). These are the results of the representative survey of pig stocks in holdings with a minimum of 50 pigs or 10 breeding sows.

The number of pig-keeping agricultural holdings declined by 3.7% to 31,700 in the past six months. The average stock of pigs increased from some 818 to 844 pigs per holding.
