Bulgaria informs of a fourth outbreak of foot and mouth disease

On January 31, 2011, Bulgarian veterinary services informed of a fourth source of foot and mouth disease after detecting the presence of non-structured antibodies in samples taken from thirteen sheep and one cow belonging to different owners. All of the animals were located in the town of Gramitokovo, including within the 10 km security radius established after the first notification of the diseases appearance, also located within the region of Burgas.

Bulgarian authorities have prohibited all transit of animals within the affected areas and have restricted the movement of persons to only the necessary.

One cattle (the total number of cattle in the village) was tested and a positive result was obtained by non-structural protein ELISA, antibody detection ELISA type O and non-structural protein ELISA confirmation test.

38 sheep were tested and 3 positive results were obtained by non-structural protein ELISA, antibody detection ELISA type O and non-structural protein ELISA confirmation test.
110 goats were tested and 10 positive results were obtained by non-structural protein ELISA, antibody detection ELISA type O and non-structural protein ELISA confirmation test.
The stamping out of all susceptible animals has started.
