European Union - New ranking of largest EU slaughterhouses in 2009

10-Nov-2010 (15 years 6 months 29 days ago)The investment, as well as the mergers, made during the last 10 years have led to the creation of large groups of slaughterhouses, usually multi-species, that operate in different countries and often include processing activities. Danish Crown, a witness to the continuing changes in the European slaughterhouse sector and holder of the second place title in 2009, has been situated in first place after last October’s acquisition of the German company, D&S Fleisch.
The slaughter of pigs in the EU is currently around 250 million animals per year. During the last year 38 slaughterhouse groups were identified, each with activity of over one million animals per year, representing 52% of total swine slaughter in the EU-27. Of these, the first 13, with more tan 2 million pigs slaughtered each year and situated in only 7 countries, accumulate 38% of the European total.
Within the ranking of the largest slaughterhouse groups in 2009 we can find the Dutch company Vion in first place, with a total of 20,2 million pigs slaughtered per year, followed by Danish Crown with 18,8 million and Tönnies Fleisch with 13,9 million. Within this ranking we can also find 4 Spanish groups (Campofrío, El Pozo, Jorge SA and Grupo Vall Companys).
