21-Sep-2010 (15 years 8 months 18 days ago)In 2010 the number of breeding pigs increased by 1.4% to 427 thousand. The number of fattening pigs decreased by 2% to 3.2 million leading to an overall reduction of 1.6% in the total number of pigs.
The number of pigs in England fell by 1.6% to 3.6 million. The fall is a slight surprise given the good market conditions (prices are below the 2009 level, but input costs are substantially lower). There was an increase of 1.4% in the number of breeding pigs, which may reflect the optimism in the sector.
