Russian pork imports during the first half of 2010 jumped 15% year-on-year, to 308,900 tonnes swt, driven by a recover in demand and tighter local production.

The major increase in imports was from the EU, up 80% year-on-year to 147,100 tonnes swt, driven by Germany (up 86% to 52,300 tonnes swt) and Denmark (up 86% to 40,600 tonnes swt).

Imports from non-EU countries decreased 13% year-on-year, largely the result of a 64% slump in US volumes, at 15,900 tonnes swt. The decline from the US was due to a number of plants being banned between December 2009 and March 2010. Brazil continues to be Russia's largest imported beef supplier, despite shipments contracting 6%, to 111,100 tonnes swt.
