Spain - Progressive decrease in swine population during last year

The latest figures on the Spanish swine census, from November 2009, show a progressive decrease in the swine population over the last year, reaching a drop of nearly 2.6%. The sharpest decrease came in the second quarter of the year, with a fall of 1.8%.

By categories, reproductive sows evolved in a parallel manner to the overall census, decreasing last year by 3.6%; the greatest decrease was also produced in the second quarter of the year. On the contrary, finishing pigs increased throughout 2009, with animals of more than 80 kg increasing by 12% between May and November 2009. Animals with less than 20 kg decreased by 7.6% last year.
