China this afternoon gave notice that it is ready to accept imports of U.S. pork, following negotiations between Chinese and U.S. officials in March that led to an agreement in which China pledged to reopen its markets to U.S. pork. U.S. pork produced on or after May 1 can now be exported to China.

China closed its markets to U.S. pork in April 2009 following the outbreak of A/H1N1 influenza in North America, which the general media misrepresented as "swine flu."
