05-Feb-2010 (16 years 4 months 4 days ago)Overall, per capita, consumption of meat, including beef, chicken, pork and turkey, decreased in 2009 from 70.1 kilos in 2008 to 66.7 kilos last year.
Pork consumption went down 8 percent while beef was least affected, showing only a 1.5 percent drop in consumption in 2009. Prices are one reason for the numbers because the economic crisis left Chileans with less money to spend in 2009. While the prices of poultry and pork stayed relatively stable, beef prices — with a marked increase in imports from Paraguay — dropped significantly.
Pork exports increased by 8 percent in volume and reached US$360 million in 2009, a 2.3 percent increase from 2008 sales.
