The gross production value in the livestock, meat and egg sector rose sharply last year. The
9% increase amounted to almost € 5.6 billion. This increase can mainly be attributed to the
pig sector, where the price levels were higher than in 2007.

Meat consumption remained stable in the Netherlands in 2008, at almost 1.4 million tonnes based on carcass weight. This corresponds to 84.7 kilos per capita. Pork consumption decreased in 2008 by nearly 500g to reach 40.6 kg per capita. This fall is related to the higher price consumers are expected to pay for pork and increased consumption of poultry.
