EU ban on certain Brazilian animal products takes effect

As of 3 September 2026, Brazil is no longer authorised to export certain animals and animal products intended for human consumption to the European Union, as it is not included in the new EU list of third countries that comply with European requirements concerning the use of certain antimicrobial medicinal products.

The measure follows the application of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1189, which amends Regulation (EU) 2021/405 and establishes the updated list of authorised third countries. The new provisions apply from 3 September 2026.

To be included on this list, third countries must provide the European Commission with evidence and guarantees that animals and products intended for the EU market comply with restrictions laid down in European legislation. In particular, they must not originate from animals treated with antimicrobials for growth promotion or to increase yield, or with medicinal products containing antimicrobials reserved in the EU for the treatment of certain infections in humans.

Brazil is not currently included among the authorised countries in the new annex. Consequently, imports into the EU of the affected products for which Brazil was previously authorised are suspended, including beef, poultry meat, equine meat, aquaculture products, eggs, honey and casings.

The situation may, however, be reviewed. If Brazil provides the necessary evidence and guarantees demonstrating compliance with EU requirements, the list of authorised third countries may be amended, allowing trade to resume.

For poultry and honey, an EU audit launched in late August is assessing compliance with European requirements and could lead to a subsequent review of their status.

The measure forms part of the EU's strategy to restrict the use of certain antimicrobials and tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), by applying requirements to imported products equivalent to certain restrictions already in force for production within the European Union.
