Following the detection of a new case of a wild boar testing positive for African swine fever (ASF) in the municipality of Castellbisbal, less than 3 km from Restricted Zone I, as reported in the latest update on the ASF situation sent on April 22, 2026, the regionalization measures adopted in response to the disease in the province of Barcelona have been modified, with the expansion of Restricted Zones I and II to include new municipalities.

This proposed amendment was approved by the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF Committee) last Thursday, and was published yesterday, April 27, in the Official Journal of the European Union via Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/985, which updates Annex I of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/594 with special control measures against ASF.

Regarding the measures taken at pig farms and other swine facilities located in Zones I and II (in Zone II, most farms are currently empty), the Veterinary Service continues monitoring, inspecting biosecurity measures, and conducting the enhanced passive surveillance established by EU regulations at the 52 commercial farms, with no positive cases detected in domestic pigs.
