This applied especially to producers of clean pigs, who achieved better prices for their animals as the year progressed. The seasonal variation in prices was comparable to other years, but on a higher level. The balance between expenditure and income in the pig sector in 2008 improved to some degree thanks to the higher prices achieved for pigs; despite higher costs for piglets, feed and energy.
Although the breeding sector did see slightly higher prices for piglets compared to 2007, the price level was clearly too low to speak of satisfactory operating results. On balance, the family income generated by the farms of both breeders and pork producers in 2008 was just above the zero line. The number of pig farms declined even further last year by 5% to 8,250. The pig population rose by 3% to 12 million.
