Colombia: 2025 ends with a boom in pork production and consumption

The swine industry's results for 2025 reflect an expansion in both slaughter and production. This dynamism was driven by stronger domestic consumption, where national production managed to maintain its market share against imports, despite the increase in the volume of foreign purchases.

• Growth in pig slaughter: Slaughter reached 6,585,386 head, up 6.4% compared to 2024.
• Increased pork production: Pork production in 2025 reached 663,875 tons, representing 9.1% growth compared to 2024.
• Regional concentration in production: 82.2% of the 2025 production was concentrated in just four departments: Antioquia (41.8%), Bogotá (15.1%), Valle del Cauca (15.2%), and Meta (10.2%).
• Growth by department: All departments showed positive growth in pork production compared to 2024.
• Increased imports: Imports in 2025 stood at 176,758 tons, representing $513.6 million, an increase of 6.6% in volume and 6.5% in value compared to 2024.
• Countries of origin: Imports from the United States (69.3%), Canada (14.8%), and Chile (11.6%) represented 95.7% of total imports in 2025.
• Products imported: 87.3% of the imports in 2025 corresponded to frozen boneless pork (38.1%), frozen chops and ribs (36.9%), other frozen pork meats (7.5%), and bone-in legs and shoulders (4.7%).
• Implicit price: The implicit price for the imported product reached an average of 11,799 Colombian pesos (COP) per kg in 2025 and was 0.1% lower than the 2024 average (COP 11,813/kg), while the variation in dollars indicated an increase of only 0.3%, going from 2.90 to 2.91 dollars per kg.
• Increased apparent consumption: The estimated apparent consumption for 2025 was 840,633 tons, reflecting an increase of 8.5% compared to the previous year.
• Breakdown of consumption: It is estimated that 79% of consumption corresponded to national production, while the remaining 21% to imports, thus maintaining the proportion observed in 2024.
• Increase in per capita consumption: Per capita consumption was estimated at 15.8 kg/inhabitant for 2025, a year-on-year increase of 7.2%.
• Price of live pigs: The price of live pigs averaged COP 9297/kg in 2025, showing a decrease of 3.6% compared to the average of the previous year.
• Reduced feed prices: In 2025, average prices for pig feed decreased by approximately 0.3% compared to 2024.
