How Chile's swine industry performed in 2025

In 2025, the Chilean swine industry showed stable performance, with moderate increases in slaughter, production, and apparent consumption. Foreign trade reflected a slight contraction in both exports and import volume. This performance suggests strengthening of the domestic market, supported by the growing share of national production in apparent consumption, which consolidates sustained expansion in domestic demand while reaffirming the importance of Chilean pork exports to key international markets. <p>Results and overview of key variables in the Chilean swine industry in 2025. Slaughter up slightly: 5,556,692 head were slaughtered in 2025, representing a 0.5% increase compared to the 5,531,737 head consolidated in 2024.
Production expanding moderately: Pork production in 2025 reached 589,376 tons (t), an increase of 0.7% compared to the 585,386 t in the previous year.
Regional concentration: 89.7% of pig production was concentrated in the Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins region, 8.2% in Maule, and the remaining 2.1% in other regions.
Positive regional performance: The Ñuble, Maule, and Santiago regions showed growth rates of 9.2%, 3.8%, and 1.4%, while the leading region (Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins) grew 0.4%.
Regional retraction: Los Lagos and La Araucanía experienced decreases in pork production of 7.7% and 1.3%.
Imports decreased: Import volume in 2025 was 129,215 tons, a slight 1.8% decrease compared to 2024. The value of these imports reached US $380.6 million CIF, 4.2% higher than the 2024 total. 88.9% of imports in 2025 came from Brazil, followed by the United States and Spain with smaller shares of 4.8% and 2.5%, respectively.
Exports: In 2025, exports decreased by 3.4%, going from 268,182 to 259,062 tons. The FOB value of these exports was $702.8 million, a 6.2% drop compared to the consolidated value in 2024. The five main export destinations in 2025 accounted for 83.8% of the total: China (39.0%), Japan (18.7%), South Korea (13.9%), Colombia (6.7%), and Costa Rica (5.5%).
Rising apparent consumption: In 2025, apparent consumption reached 459,529 tons, representing a 2.4% increase compared to the 448,829 tons recorded in 2024.
Share of domestic production and imports: The share of domestic production in total apparent consumption increased from 70.7% in 2024 to 71.9% in 2025. The share of imports decreased from 29.3% to 28.1% in the same period.
