Thailand, China and South Korea - A/H1N1 virus found in pigs

22-Dec-2009 (16 years 5 months 17 days ago)In the last few days the IOE has reported on the appearance of cases of flu due to the A/H1N1 virus in swine herds in Thailand and China while other sources have also reported its appearance in pigs in South Korea.
In the case of Thailand just one solitary outbreak has been confirmed, on a farm with 640 susceptible animals situated in the province of Saraburi. The positive cases were detected in the framework of strengthened surveillance. In China, there have been two confirmed focal points, at one of these it has affected dogs while at the other it has affected pigs. In the case of the pigs, four positive samples were discovered at an abattoir among 60 pigs which were to be slaughtered in Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, by National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory in the routine inspection before slaughtering. Finally, the first case of pigs infected with swine flu, the type-A form of the H1N1 virus, has been confirmed in Korea. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Monday said pigs raised at five farms in the country and six breeding pigs imported from Canada late last month were infected with the H1N1 virus. The five farms are one in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, and two each in Gimcheon and Gunwi, both in North Gyeongsang Province.
