MRSA spreads throughout the Dutch intensive livestock farming sectors. Among pig farms, 68.3% of 202 farms tested positive for MRSA.
The MRSA clone that is most frequently observed is ST398 – a type that spreads easily within animal populations. In livestock farming an increased risk of MRSA carriage has currently been established in those working with pigs or veal calves.
