ASF cases down in Europe in the first half of 2024

In the first semester of the year, a total of 3,428 cases of African swine fever (ASF) were confirmed in wild boar, a decrease of 34% compared to the same period of the previous year (5,200 cases), and 198 outbreaks in domestic pigs, 55% less than in 2023 (445 outbreaks).

Regarding outbreaks in domestic pigs, Romania has experienced a notable reduction from 146 to 66 cases (-55%), as has Serbia, which has decreased by 67%, from 200 to 65 cases.

In wild boar, Poland (from 1,936 to 947 cases), Germany (736 to 123 cases), and Slovakia (478 to 82 cases) have shown a drastic decrease in cases, contrasting with significant increases in Italy (+39%, from 709 to 984 cases), Latvia (+64%, from 203 to 333 cases), and Lithuania (52%, from 200 to 303 cases).

In general, wild boar cases in several countries are trending downward, while domestic cases show more varied fluctuations, with some countries increasing and others decreasing or stabilizing.
