United States: Contraction of sow inventory continues

These are the highlights from the latest U.S. hog inventory report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on June 27.

As of June 1, there were 74.5 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, an increase of 1% from June of the previous year and slightly higher than the March 1, 2024 total.
Of the total 74.5 million head, 68.5 million were market hogs while 6.01 million were breeding sows.
Between March and May 2024, 34 million pigs were weaned on U.S. farms, representing a 2% increase compared to last year. An average of 11.56 pigs were weaned per litter.
U.S. hog producers intend to farrow 2.96 million breeding sows between June and August, and 2.94 million between September and November 2024.
Iowa hog producers accounted for the largest inventory among the states with 24.6 million head, followed by Minnesota with 9.2 million head, and North Carolina with 7.6 million head.
