A total of 8,083,412 pigs were slaughtered in 2023, which represents a 4.8% increase compared to 2022.
80.5% of the pigs slaughtered were finishing pigs. The results by province showed that Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, and Cordoba accounted for 84.6% of the total number of pigs processed, with 6,841,301 head.
Pork production reached 761,863 tons (t) in 2023, a 4.8% increase compared to 2022.
The average carcass weight in 2023 was 94.1 kg, which was very similar to the average recorded the previous year (94.3 kg).
By category, castrated males weighed an average of 93 kg while entire immunocastrated males weighed 98 kg.
Pork exports for 2023 increased 43.7% compared to 2022, reaching 13,658 tons, representing USD 11.7 million.
Imports reached 16,413 t, valued at USD 54.4 million, which represents a 59.2% decrease in volume compared to 2022.
The trade balance for the swine industry in 2023 resulted in a deficit of approximately USD 42.7 million.
Apparent consumption reached 776,854 t, which represented an increase of 0.3% compared to 2022 (774,852 t), while per capita consumption was estimated at 15.78 kg/inhabitant as of December, representing an annual decrease of 2.8%.
