Following its consultation, Defra recently confirmed the new independent animal health body would not be given responsibility for animal welfare.
However, during a heated debate at the British Veterinary Association (BVA) congress at the weekend, vets said the move was fundamentally flawed.
They claimed it would be ‘impossible’ to separate the issues of health and welfare and raised concerns that policy could suffer under the new regime.
