This week the meeting of the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers was held, and among the topics discussed was the state of the European pork sector.

During the meeting, Belgium presented a proposal to the Commission, with the support of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, to activate the provisions of the Common Market Organisation concerning exceptional market measures in the pig meat sector.

This sector is facing challenges as a result of high feed prices, reduced demand, and the impact of African swine fever on European pig meat prices outside the EU.
