China says ASF situation generally stable, but still complicated

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, since the beginning of this year, a total of 11 African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks have been reported across the country, involving 8 provinces, and 2,216 pigs have been culled. For comparison:
- 2018: 99 cases reported, 800,000+ pigs culled
- 2019: 63 cases reported, 390,000 pigs culled
- 2020: 19 cases reported, 13,500 pigs culled
- 2021 so far: 11 cases reported, 2,216 pigs culled
The government said the overall situation of the epidemic is stable but that the current prevention and control situation is still very complicated. Epidemics have occurred in all provinces. There are also positive detections found in all links, including slaughter, transportation, etc.
Recently, new strains with weakened virulence have appeared. The new strains have mild symptoms, but the incubation period is long and short-term detection is difficult, so prevention and control are still very complicated. In addition, the risk from overseas import channels is also relatively high.
