The European Union (EU) provides 70 percent of Korea's imports of belly pork. Belly pork used in samgyeopsal is a huge favorite among Koreans.

Customs officials said that Korea imported a total of 48,507 tons of belly pork during the January-June period this year, with about 33,233 tons or 69 percent coming from the EU. Korea paid $115 million for the imports.

Austria was the biggest exporter to Korea at 6,613 tons, followed by Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Spain.
