Japan will allow the vaccination of pigs against CSF

Japan confirmed the emergence of classical swine fever for the first time in 26 years last September 2018 in domestic pigs.

According to the vaccination policy in Japan, it is only allowed to vaccinate wild boars orally with baits in selected areas in Gifu and Aichi. So far, the vaccination of domestic pigs has been forbidden. Nevertheless, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Taku Eto, announced last Friday that the specific guidelines for the prevention of the disease will be revised to allow the preventive vaccination of domestic pigs, as well as asking the manufacturers to increase the production of vaccines.

So far, the Japanese veterinary authorities have confirmed 44 outbreaks in domestic pigs and more than 900 cases in wild boars.

In domestic pigs, the disease has been detected in the prefectures of Gifu, Aichi, Nagano, Shiga, Osaka, Mie, Fukui and Saitama; and in wild boars, in Gifu, Aichi, Mie, Fukui, Nagano, Toyama and Ishikawa.

Current situation of classical swine fever in wild boars

• In Gifu (since September 13th, 2018): 1,914 wild boars (368 dead and 1.546 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 841 (275 dead and 566 captured) have tested positive to the disease.
• In Aichi (since September 14th, 2018): 797 wild boars (36 dead and 761 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 65 (16 dead and 49 captured) have tested positive to the diseases.
• In Nagano (since September 14th, 2018): 212 wild boars (89 dead and 123 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 59 (29 dead and 30 captured) have tested positive to the disease.
• In Mie (since September 14th, 2018): 131 wild boars (15 dead and 116 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 4 (0 dead and 4 captured) have tested positive to the disease.
• In Fukui (since September 14th, 2018): 39 wild boars (5 dead and 34 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 7 (0 dead and 7 captured) have tested positive to the diseases.
• In Toyama (since September 14th, 2018): 29 wild boars (9 dead and 20 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR, and 4 (3 dead and 1 captured) have tested positive to the disease.
• Ishikawa, 7 wild boars positive to the disease from a total of 128 captured.
• In the other 36 prefectures (since September 14th, 2018): 352 wild boars (265 dead and 87 captured) have been tested with RT-PCR and none has tested positive to the disease.
