In Nicaragua, pig production has gone from the traditional backyard farm production to the production on semi-technified farms, this allowing it to go from a self-sufficiency of 40% to 70%. With this strategy, the Nicaraguan government proposes to increase to 100% the self-sufficiency of the national consumption.

Currently, the Nicaraguan pig herd has 515,615 heads on 150,338 production units, where creole breeds, and crosses with improved breeds to a lesser degree, are used. With this strategy it is proposed, together with the pig producers and the institutions of the production system, to improve the production and reproduction indices on the intensive and semi-intensive farms in all the country, the adding of value to pork, and its processing to obtain products and by-products for the opening to new markets.
