USA: Highest-ever June hog inventory reported

As of June 1, there were 75.5 million hogs and pigs on U.S. farms, up 4 percent from June 2018, and 1 percent from March 1, 2019, according to the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report published today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). This is the highest June 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs since estimates began in 1964.
Other key findings in the report were:
- Of the 75.5 million hogs and pigs, 69.1 million were market hogs, while 6.41 million were kept for breeding.
- Between March and May 2019, 34.2 million pigs were weaned on U.S. farms, up 4 percent from the same time period one year earlier.
- From March through May 2019, U.S. hog and pig producers weaned an average of 11.00 pigs per litter.
- U.S. hog producers intend to have 3.18 million sows farrow between June and August 2019, and 3.17 million sows farrow between September and November 2019.
- Iowa hog producers accounted for the largest inventory among the states, at 23.7 million head.
- North Carolina and Minnesota had the second and third largest inventories with 9.20 million and 8.70 million head, respectively.
