The University of Maryland School of Medicine's Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) has been awarded $20 million from the National Institutes of Health to create a Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases.

The new institute will use the funding to sequence and analyze the genomes of infectious organisms such as agents of bioterrorism and new or emerging diseases such as the 2009 H1N1 flu, SARS or foodborne illnesses.
