11-May-2009 (17 years 1 months 2 days ago)Officials in Alberta culled 500 hogs on the pig farm where the new swine flu virus was detected, but it was not because the animals were sick, the province’s chief veterinarian said Saturday.
The decision to cull the animals was to ease overcrowding on the central Alberta farm, Dr. Gerald Hauer said.
"This doesn’t have anything to do with the flu," Hauer, told a news conference. "It has to do again with animal welfare."
