According to data published by the Ministry of Agriculture in its annual report "Characterization of the Spanish pig sector" relating to 2014, last year saw a new historical record, surpassing 1.5 million tons exported, despite the restrictions imposed by the important Russian market.

Spain recorded an increase of 11% in the total volume (+7.3% in value) of exports and of 33% in exports volume (+35.8% in value) to third countries, compared to 2013. The increase outside the EU mainly affects meat (carcasses and cuts), and offal, with increases of 48% and 25% respectively in export volume. Non-EU exports of bacon and non-rendered fat (-10%), the items most affected by the Russian veto, decrease. Japan and South Korea are the markets where imports from Spain have increased the most throughout the year. China-Hong Kong remains as the main destination for Spanish exports from the sector, following the restrictions imposed by the Russian authorities. Amongst the EU destinations, France (31%), Portugal (22%) and Italy (14%) are the most important.
